Overview

The second level of the Backrooms, Level 1, resembles an industrial warehouse and stretches on into infinity, similar to Level 0. However it differs greatly in both general appearance and a variety of other ways.

Structure

Due to corrosion, the pipes found on the walls of Level 1 are in a poor state and pools of liquid can be found on the ground. Level 1 appears as a warehouse with concrete flooring and walls; similar to industrial storage areas. This level can support habitation due to a indefinite supply of electricity and water, in contrast to Level 0.
Stairs, elevators, randomly placed rooms of various kinds, and corridors can be found throughout the level.

Avoiding an extended stay is warranted as during the regular power outages there is a considerably increased risk of encountering entities.

Level 1 contains supplies which have a fair likelihood of being discovered. The level offers a wide range of supplies that can be vital for survival, such as:

  • Certain food and drinks; individual judgement of whether these are healthy to use is required.
  • Basic hand tools could be found (including trowels, fire axes, spare pipes and even equipment like hard hats or protective gloves).
  • Pens and notebooks/papers are common, although most notebooks can rarely be utilized since the majority currently have technical documentation for standard industrial equipment filling the pages.
  • Emergency materials can also be found reasonably easily as first aid and AED cabinets typically appear in rooms with machinery present.
  • Batteries and flashlights are able to be found in certain, typically smaller storage-like, rooms. These might be beneficial in low-light situations, but can attract the attention of entities, namely Smilers.

It should be noted that equipment appearing can be sporadic. Ranging from being very common to very rare since out of the variety of rooms, most only ever contain certain types of materials.

Utilizing equipment that is found can greatly increase chances of survival although relying wholly on it invites wanderers to stay in the level; and while seeming like a potential option to survive, regular blackouts and the unpredictable nature of resource availability quickly diminishes the usefulness of anything possibly found.
It is common to stumble upon areas, such as machine rooms, with non-operational machinery. Even though seeming to be long since operational, harmful gases continue to be emitted from exhausts as reported by several wanderers; it is recommended to immediately leave any area that has signs of noxious gases (smells, dizziness, weakness).

Entities are regularly spotted here; usually hiding away near dead-ends or isolated rooms. Further making travel and searching for resources more dangerous.

Nature

Level 1 initially seems more hospitable and accommodating to life than Level 0, but this sense of security is usually short-lived.

Finding pools of unidentified liquids is commonplace. More often than not, these liquids are not water and are caustic towards organic materials. Higher temperatures in this level cause a condensation to appear on surfaces. As well as coating surfaces in the liquids, these conditions provide the environment for mold to grow within the porous concrete.
These liquids move throughout the pipes in an erratic manner. Whether due to the aggressive movements of the pipes' contents or simply their state of corrosion, they are prone to bursting, spewing out their contents at an alarming rate. These moments may be hazardous to one's health, either from exposure to the toxic contents within or from the concussive force of the pipe's rupturing.

Furthermore, many electrical connections are unstable. Regularly experiencing disruptions in lighting and hearing a lack of distant machinery is not uncommon. Lightbulbs can also spontaneously pop. Smaller pipes found around the level are actually electrical housing and contain wiring. These can also be found broken, exposing the internal wires. These wires are live and can cause electrocution.
It is advised to leave this level as soon as possible because it has poor water and electrical quality.
Anonymous lights are the primary lighting at Level 1, but it's important to be careful not to turn them off and to maintain the flashlights found in the boxes.

Entities

In this level there are several types of entities that can possibly be encountered, especially in areas that are dark or secluded. Entities to look out for include:

Passageways

Entrances

  • Clipping anywhere in Level 0 has the potential to lead to Level 1.
  • Narrowing walls smoothing out into concrete in Level 3 can sometimes lead to Level 1.

Exits

  • Returning to Level 0 by clipping can happen.
  • Staircases occasionally bring one back to an area in Level 0.
  • Wide hallways can occasionally lead to Level 3.
  • One may find themselves at Level 5 when entering a room through a wooden door.
